Our Story

Yuen Long District covers a vast piece of land in the northwest of the New Territories. Past generations mainly lived on farming, fishing and the production of salt and pearls. In recent years, the Government actively developed Yuen Long into an urban area, encouraging construction of private housing and enhancing transport networks, which attracted many young and new families to move into Yuen Long. According to the 2021 Census and Statistics Department Census Report, the population of Yuen Long District is around 670,000. While the town centre becomes more prosperous and vibrant, some Yuen Long residents enjoy a quiet and peaceful suburban living environment creating the present Yuen Long District with both prosperity and tranquility.

Tin Shui Wai is part of the Yuen Long District. It had been developed since 1990 to cope with the rapid growth of population in the District. The government built a large number of public rental housing estates and apartments under the Home Ownership Scheme. With the development of transport networks and public facilities, a lot of urban residents and new immigrants moved into Tin Shui Wai. Currently, its population is about 40% of the total population of Yuen Long District, amounting to around 270,000 residents.

Yuen Long District Health Centre

According to the "2017 Policy Address", the government has advocated to establish a district health centre with a brand new operation model for developing primary healthcare. Based on the principles of public-private partnership, medical-social collaboration and district-based, the centre aims to provide health promotion and chronic disease management. It also takes on the role to coordinate community resources in enhancing public awareness towards disease prevention and self- management of own’s health.

The average age range of residents in Yuen Long is 43.7 years old, becoming a younger generation comparing with some other districts. However, with reference to the data from the project entitled “Family: A Jockey Club Initiative for a Harmonious Society, 2011-2014” conducted by The School of Public Health of The University of Hong Kong, it showed that the incidences of insufficient vegetable intake, lack of physical exercises, drinking alcohol and smoking among residents of Yuen Long were relatively higher than the general population of Hong Kong; thus leading to higher risks in developing chronic diseases. Also, those residents of Tin Shui Wai who are busily trying to earn a living, are also ignoring the importance of healthy lifestyles. Therefore, the establishment of the "Yuen Long District Health Centre" (YLDHC) will provide a series of individual and family-based health risk assessments and health education for people residing and working in the District. Through the prevention-focused and personalized healthcare plans tailored–made by multi-disciplinary teams, people are empowered to start changing to healthy habits bit by bit and to learn self-management so as to strengthen their physical conditions. YLDHC will work hand-in-hand with residents to build up new healthy lifestyles.
